Controlling smart home devices using a digital tablet

We all have things precious to us that we want to protect. They may be family heirlooms and photographs, but there are also the people we live with who need to be protected as well. While there’s no sense in being terrified of the outside world, there’s plenty of sense in preparing for the worst-case scenario. And the best way to do that is by installing a home security system.

What is a Home Security System?

A home security is a network of devices and sensors; triggering a sensor will set off the alarm. It generally includes a control panel, motion detectors, door sensors, window sensors, indoor cameras, outdoor cameras, signs, and a loud alarm. Aside from the alarm, people with home security systems installed can also get updates on their mobile devices. Cameras can also be connected to a smartphone for remote viewing. Most people are familiar with the older, traditional systems. But there are newer home security systems that sync with your smart home devices.

What Are They For?

The term ‘home security system’ will usually bring to mind images of burglars dressed in all black coming through the window at night. But the term includes devices to protect you and your home from things within your home such as fires and carbon monoxide detectors, and even detecting water damage. They’re also useful for busy families caring for an elderly person or have a young child on the go thanks to smart locks and surveillance.

Are They Worth It?

Now more than ever. This has little to do with the necessity for a security system and more to do with the fact that the technology is changing, as seen in the syncing of mobile devices and smart homes. Older security systems will struggle to keep up as technology advances. In general, though, a properly maintained home security system will last twenty or more years. This means regularly testing and replacing back up batteries every three to four years. Test the alarms at least once a week, or every seven to ten days. Fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should undergo routine inspection by a certified technician once every year. Older, wire-based systems should be checked for any damage in the wiring. Wireless systems need proper security to prevent hackers from disabling it.
